If you were crazy about animated movies produced by Ghibli as a child, the place that should be mentioned here is the famous Ghibli Museum. Inside the museum, you can learn about the production process of classic childhood cartoons such as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, The Secret World of Aeriety, etc. .. as well as enjoy your favorite cartoon-themed rooms. Even the garden is accessible on a wet day when the museum sets up tents.

You must reserve a ticket for the chosen date in advance. There are no tickets available at the door. When purchasing your ticket, choose your preferred entry time. Tickets for the following month will be available at 10 a.m. on the 10th of each month.

For example, if you wish to purchase tickets for the 31st of January, they will be available at 10 a.m. on December 10th. Each ticket will be available exclusively as an e-ticket (a maximum of 6 tickets per person) and can only be purchased using your smartphone. To acquire your tickets ahead of time, you will also need to join up and download the app ローチケ. 

Adults pay 1,000 JPY (~6.89 USD), high school, and junior high school students pay 700 JPY (~4.83 USD), elementary school students pay 400 JPY (~2.76 USD), and children aged 4 and up pay 100 JPY (~0.69 USD). 

Tickets are no longer available for purchase outside of the United States as of July 2020. You’ll also need to reserve a ticket with a Japanese phone number beginning with 090, 080, or 070. Once you download the app, you’ll be prompted to provide your phone number and a short message.

Another option is to book through a travel agent. The optional 90-minute excursion is included in the price of the package. Because the majority of the exhibition is in Japanese, hiring a guide to tour you around might significantly improve your experience. Although it may be a bit pricey, this option is worth considering, especially if you don’t have a Japanese phone number and want to ensure that you get a ticket for your trip.

The Ghibli Film Appreciation Tour and Tokyo Studio Ghibli Museum feature visits to the Ghibli Museum as well as two venues that impacted the popular Ghibli films: the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architecture Museum and Hotel Gajoen. Located about a little over 2 hours’ drive north of Tokyo, there is a town famous for its distinctive and exquisite pottery- Mashiko. Shimazaki Sake Brewery (Shimazaki Shuzo)

Since 1849, Shimazaki Sake Distillery has focused solely on sake production. With pure water from the Nakagawa River, which originates from Mount Nasu, along with local rice, the journey to create sweet Sake begins here.

Typically, the prime consumption period for sake is within 1-2 years of production. However, this brewery has earned the moniker “Cave Brewery” in Japan due to their practice of aging sake within a nearby cave that was initially excavated during WWII. 

From 1970 onwards, they have reserved some of their premium-grade sake for maturation inside “The Cave.” Visitors are warmly invited to take a tour of “The Cave” and relish samples of the sake produced here.

Moving a little north of Tokyo, I strongly recommend extending your day trip by visiting nearby Utsunomiya for gyoza, cocktails, and jazz. Surely you will have a more complete experience when visiting this brewery.

Watanabesahei Sake Brewery (Watanabesahei Shouten)

This brewery was established in 1842 and relies heavily on locally grown rice and water from the melting snow of the Nikko mountains to create its famous sake. A rarity in Japan, about 90% of the sake produced by this brewery is of the “Junmaishu” type, which means pure sake.

Junmaishu is made from only the basic ingredients of sake (rice, water, koji, and yeast) without any additional additives. This feature helps to give Junmaishu a richer and stronger flavor.
